Menu trouble

Hi

I’m trying to make my menu transparent so you can see the logo. If I use the following css:

.menu a:link {
    background: none repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
}

I lose the hover colour. Does anyone know a way around this? Help would be very much appreciated
