• Hi,

I’m looking for a way to put a transient message on a page. We want a user to be able to find out about any current problems, but the problem messages need to expire, as it’s too big a demand on the support team to remember to reset each message after, say, staying up half the night fixing the problem.

So ideally a user would create a message and expiry time:

Users may be experiencing problems in the Amsterdam area, due to a lightening strike on the main system. 3h

And the message would stay on the page for 3 hours, then revert to blank or ‘All systems running normally’.

Even systems like statuspage.io don’t seem to support this timed expiry. We wondered about using a twitter feed and just displaying the most recent tweet on the site, but timed tweets aren’t an option now.

We’d be really grateful for ideas on this one. Any suggestions what services or plugins might support this?

  • You can create a post category and use a plugin found here https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/search/post+expire/

To display the post you will have to create a custom loop to show only that category.

Please seek assistance with modifying theme files with child theme developer. commercial/custom themes are not supported here.

You could create a custom field that includes the expiry date/time. In your theme, you could show messages as long as they have not yet expired. This might need an expert wordpress developer, so you might have to hire one.

Thanks for the quick responses Jay and Francis. I realise the problem is a little more complex than it looks at first. Because the support engineers probably won’t have access to a WordPress login – so ideally we’re looking for an external service that they can post to, that manages it all.

Anyone know of one of those?
