BuddyPress has a hidden option so autocomplete can work for everyone if the friends component is disabled.

Add the following snippet to /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php:

define( 'BP_MESSAGES_AUTOCOMPLETE_ALL', true );

Okay thanks for the info. I cannot see that file however. Do I have to create it?
