I set a default meta description for BuddyPress profiles but when I viewed the profile page source, no meta description tag was found. Bing also indicated an issue with missing meta description tag.

I observed that no Smartcrawl meta tags are actually showing in BuddyPress profile pages. Only the Smartcrawl opening and closing tags were included in the Buddypress profile pages without any meta tags.

I am also using Youzify in case you want to replicate the issue.

    Hi @lawkeep

    I hope you’re well today!

I just tested this with current SmartCrawl and BuddyPress and a free version of Youzify (I don’t have access to premium one) and I couldn’t replicate the issue. The description and title are showing on my end the way I’ve sett them in SmartCrawl.

I’ve tested it with no other plugins enabled and Twenty Twenty-One theme so in a pretty “basic” environment and I’m not sure also about Youzify premium settings – are there any settings/add-on that you think may be related to it?

Have you tried temporarily switching theme and temporarily disabling all other plugins to see if that changes anything?

If not, please try this and if it starts to work then try enabling them all back one by one, after each one checking page source again. Once the meta tag disappears, you’d know that the last enabled plugin right before that would be the most likely the source of the conflict and we could then examine it further.

    Best regards,
    Adam

Thanks for inspecting the issue. I followed your tips and did rigorous checks. I found out that the meta description tag set in Smartcrawl shows only when profile is appended to the URL (eg https://www.example.com/john/profile/).

I was hoping the meta description tags would apply when visiting member pages without specifically clicking on a profile tab on a member’s page (eg https://www.example.com/john/). I think it would be nice if meta description tags could apply to member pages as such since that is the way member pages are listed in the Smartcrawl sitemap. The problem now is that those pages in the sitemap would be crawled without meta description tags.

    In a nutshell:

https://www.example.com/john/ = no meta description tag

https://www.example.com/john/profile/ = visible meta description tag

    I hope this helps.

I would also like to know if it’s possible to truncate the meta description to 160 characters. It seems Smartcrawl is using 300 characters which results in many default meta descriptions appearing too long.

    Hi @lawkeep

Thank you for testing this and updating me here.

I’ve checked it on my end and yes – you are right. It works at /name/profile pages (which is the way I’ve tested it previously) but not at just /name/ pages.

I double-checked settings of both plugins (I also can confirm that it’s not related in any way to Youzify and other plugins/theme) and checked our internal issue reporting system but found nothing relevant so far.

It seems it’s an issue that that we weren’t yet aware of so I’ve reported it to our SmartCrawl developers team as a bug. They’ll investigate it and include fix with one of upcoming releases but please note that at this point I’m not able to give any ETA yet.

    Kind regards,
    Adam
