• I am looking for a plugin that will create a separate entry field for the meta description on the write post screen. I have seen the plugins that will pull the meta description from the excerpt, but I would like the description to be different from that.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  • What would the difference be if you had a description box or the exerpt box? They accomplish the same thing…

Use a combination of post custom fields and William Thomas’ keyword plugin:

The meta description would be intended for search engines who use this information in the search results. I may want this to look different than just the beginning of the post in order to put more emphasis on certain keywords.

Although on second thought this might not be that big of an advantage since Google uses the first couple of lines in the body text and not the meta description.

Thanks for posting the custom fields information. That looks useful for quite a few purposes.

Google, MSN, Yahoo et al seem to bounce around in terms of what they display as the listing’s description in search results. It is still worthwhile to have your meta description tag in place and for it to be a compelling and accurate summary or teaser. The excerpt as meta description plugin really should be in the wordpress core by default.
