Meta Robot Tags and 404 Errors

Seems I have a lot of questions, but it’s all based on a lack of knowledge.
Under Meta Robot Tags Editor I have “Tag archives” checkmarked so that bots don’t index domain.com/tag/this-tag/ stuff. However, I’m still getting 404 errors for /tag/this-tag/ URLs that bots are going to.
What did I misunderstand?
