Migrate Events

Howdy golb,

You can export events as an iCal by visiting you calendar and clicking the “export events” link at the bottom. Most people only display 10 or so events per page, so you might want to bump your Events Per Page setting in WP Admin > Settings > Display to a really high number temporarily, and then export more at once. You can export past events by clicking the past link. Or you can export them as an XML using WP Admin > Tools > Export.

Hopefully your new calendar will import from one of those formats.

Thanks for the reply. Both of the websites are using your plugin. I’m also planning on getting the Pro version if that changes anything. I’ll upgrade now if it makes this easier.

I tried the iCal export feature but I can’t import it in the Events Calendar. It looks like you can only export as iCal or XML but only import as a csv. Is there no way to move events between different iterations of the plugin?

I am sorry I did not understand you then. I thought you were trying to migrate away. The last option I mentioned is the best method in your case, namely the XML export. However, if you are exporting posts to a different site with it’s own unique settings and information, not a replica, the post exported might give you headaches. Make backups before doing anything.

I was just about to ask the same question. Why can we export as an iCal and import only as a CSV? I would like to export/import in the same format. I also have two sites that would like to run the same events.

I was able to accomplish the goal by utilizing Mozilla Thunderbird. It’s free and imports iCal files but can also explort csv files. Here are the general steps I took:

1. Export events in iCal format from the website calendar (each month had its own file).
2. Import iCal files into Thunderbird
3. Export events from Thunderbird in csv format
4. Import csv files into The Events Calendar plugin. Most of the names lined up so it was pretty easy. The only problem is none of the location data transferred so there was still some work to be done.

You can export as an XML and also import as XML. THis is WordPress’ builtin way of transferring posts from site to site.

We are also working on an iCal importer. It is currently in its beta phase. The reason you can import as a CSV is because that is by far and away the most common and easiest to use format for imports. Hope that clears things up.
