I need to export/migrate the site structure (theme, plugins, settings) to my local environment for some offline testing. The site is big ( > 20k Posts ) so I don’t want (or need) to export the content.

Does the inbuilt import/export tool provide that flexibility or is it a plugin or WP-CLI option?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I personally use LocalWP for local testing and such. What I did is download all files via FileZilla and my cPanel AND then export the database via the db tool of my host.

Then I placed all the files in the file directory of the LocalWP website and imported the database there.

But, I have to say it’s a tedious process. Especially when you don’t replace all URL’s and such. Also, depending on the policies of PRO plugins, it might be that they aren’t active in your local version.

Copying/moving a website isn’t an easy thing to do. Here is a tutorial I found online: https://wpengine.com/resources/migrate-wordpress-site/

When you start with the copy/move… Keep your head in the game. Since, it’s easy to do a tiny thing wrong and look hours and hours for a solution.

But, there are plugins like WPVivid or BackupGuard which can take a complete back-up of your website and import it somewhere else.
