I am a bit overwhelmed with all of the resources out there, but haven’t come across much that speaks to the process when you have your blog hosted on your own domain (not blogspot.com). I am keeping my blog at the same domain. Are there special steps to take in order to do this?

Currently, my blog is set to domain/news and I intend to move my blog to the index page.

Yes, you can also move your wordpress to other directory without moving files/folders. More help https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress

Thanks! I have things underway. 2 hiccups:

    – .htaccess file issues (going to start a separate post regarding this pesky file!)

    – my previous blog was ftp-based… So, when I go into WP-Admin import tool, this warning comes up:

To use this importer, you must have a Google account and an upgraded (New, was Beta) blog hosted on blogspot.com or a custom domain (not FTP).

eek! Hmm… I,m thinking I might have to actually convert my ftp blog to a blogspot one, THEN use the import? I’m not sure if this is the easiest option, or creates unncessary work.

    An advice?
    Thx!

loopme, yeah there is an option to host Blogger blog in own server instead of at Blogger though I hear that that feature is no longer going to be supported anymore.

I have migrated all such Blogger blogs to WPMU some years ago, and this is what I went through. Before doing so, remember to copy and save the HTML of your custom blogger theme if you have one.

mercime – thanks for your tips. The future “unsupport” of ftp-based blogs is precisely why I am migrating over. I am using this (forced) opportunity to update the look of things, so I don’t have to worry about my old blogger theme. (although I have backed it up just in case!)

I checked out your links. I’ll test out this method when i have a bit more time and a tad less frustration ??

loopme, not many knew about or used the ftp-based Blogger feature. Just try or Google for as many ways to backup and export your Blogger ftp-blog and import to WordPress. Feel free to share if you’ve found another or better way to work it. Good luck.

I am in the process of migrating from Blogger custom to WordPress too and it is not going well.

I haven’t been able to import all my comments from blogger. So I updated the php.ini file to 5mb and imported the blog as a wxr file, but it duplicated all posts, the originals with tags as categories and the wxr file stuff with tags as tags. So now I have hundreds more posts than I’ve ever actually had.

I then changed the amount of posts to view on a single screen from ’20’ to ‘700’ to try and delete them all in one go, but now I get a completely blank screen when I click on posts in WordPress. Arggh!!

Is there a way to delete all posts and simply start the import all over again? I’m also a bit worried by the fact I cannot access any posts right now.

Just Football, try importing Blogger from a free account at WordPress.com and use its powerful servers. Export XML from the free account you created, and import said XML to self-hosted WP. After all’s well, delete free account at WordPress.com

    Thanks ??

Actually I ended up increasing the memory limit to 64mb and that loaded fine, then reduced the posts per page to 20 odd, deleted all comments, tags, categories and posts and re-uploaded everything from scratch using the wxr file. Seems to work ok now.

loopme, did you get this to work?

I am in exactly the same situation and have questions before I actually upload WP files and import from my self-hosted blogger blog. I’ve run my backups and have all the html & CSS files saved.

I’d love to know what process you ended up using and how it worked.

Are you keeping the same url for your blog? I’d like to keep the same address for mine.

Is your old data and new data in the same directory? My current blog is at /public_html/blog

What happens when you import? Does it keep your data in the same place and just convert it to WordPress formatting?

I’m actually excited to be leaving Blogger.com – this forced move will be good for my business.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I agree – the forced move is good, but still frustrating!

I have not migrated info over, nor do I feel I have “the easiest” answer yet. (Right now, the leading method seems to be convert my self-hosted/ftp site to a blogspot site, THEN use the WP import tool.)

Meanwhile, I do have WP set up and running, but there are a few problems I’m trying to overcome first that may cause problems during migration. (Can’t get .htaccess & permissions working correctly! – any experts reading this and have pointers?!)

To answer some of your other questions:
I’m keeping the same URL, although the exact page my blog is on will be changing. but I do have WP saved in the main/root directory of that URL. My data will remain in the same directory, although different folders I’d presume?

Best of luck! Do let me know once you dive into it and how it goes; I’ll do the same. hoping it’s a productive weekend ??

I went ahead and tried to migrate to a blogspot blog and it’s a nightmare! Blogspot changed and added text to my html and now when I tried to import from blogspot to WP, it didn’t really work. I cannot post from WP and have it show up because blogspot is still taking over. I don’t suggest that method.

I’ve deleted my blog from my server and have reloaded the pages from my back-up on my hard-drive. Now to figure out what the next step is.

    (@just-football)

Have to say, this procedure is driving me mad!

I too have a self-hosted blogger blog. I did the import but it could not import all comments, so to get around that I had to convert Blogger’s xml to a wxr file. But then you have the issue of maintaining permalinks. Short of going in and editing every single permalink, you’re left with the only other alternative which is losing all the history built up in Google etc.

To cut a long story short I am going crazy. Can anyone at WordPress help explain why the importer only recognises 40 of about 700 comments?

    Thread Starter loopme

    (@loopme)

JustFootball: Yikes! I was optimistic with your earlier post…. then see your latest.

So far, I’ve exported the xml from blogger, used the conversion tool to create the wxr, but then i’m getting file size errors when i try to import. Trying to figure out where to increase file size (where did you do that?)

My fingers are crossed that the fact I have next-to-no comments may be a blessing in disguise…

    thx
    fingers crossed for you!

    Thread Starter loopme

    (@loopme)

    kathaemert –
    I have found success!!

from blogger, i exported the XML.
then i used https://blogger2wordpress.appspot.com/ to create a WXR file.
finally from within WP, used the Tools:Import:Wordpress page to import this.

    and DONE!

it was super easy. all the hard stuff came before. my hosting provider is really what save the day, generously helping create the .htaccess file, set permissions, and adjust a php file to handle a larger file upload.

    best of luck!
