• Hiyas!
    Starting point:
Older hardly customized Geeklog site with internal Geeklog forum & Menalto Gallery 1 which has got bridged users. So users log in into geeklog and get automaticly an gallery account and post in the forum – worked nice. I had several Geeklog contributors with each one an own category to post in and they got personal Albums within the Menalto Gallery.

    What I want:
Since the Geeklog install is *really* outdated since years and I can’t just update because of my modifications and all the work I want a modern system with some nice new features: I want WP (current 3.1) with all my former postings & users migrated to WordPress. I want my internal Geeklog forums posting as well use with a new board, phpBB I guess. I want as well either use the old menalto Gallery 1 in combination with WP (bridge Mode) or the Gallery 2 or 3 – doesn’t really matter to me: It should just *work* – I want it *ALL* *bg* ??

    What I did so far:
Converted all the postings & users & comments from Geeklog to WP with the converter can be found somewhere in the google lands. I had to use the converter first with WP 2.X because the WP import script didn’t work with 3.1 directly and had to do some manual DB tweaks as well after importing to make the postings look nice (add “read more” tags and so on…). Then I could easily upgrade from WP 2.X to 3.1. So now I’ve got WP 3.1 with all my former postings AND Users! Cheers…. half way done!

    – I converted the internal Geeklog board into a phpBB2 board with the Geeklog phpBB2 bridge. That Geeklog plugin had some synchronization feature which worked well to copy the postings AND Geeklog users into a phpBB2. I could later upgrade the phpBB2 to phpBB3 of course – great!

Cheers again. Now I have an actual WP3.1 and an phpBB3 with all my content. BUT I’ve got double similar user database: Once within WP and once within phpBB3!

Problem 1: How can I bring these two together? The UserIDs (seen in phpMyAdmin) are not similar anymore. On the convert-way they somehow get mixed up. In my earlier Geeklog & internal board setup there was ONE shared DB. So I guess I just can’t remove the phpBB3 users and then say let WP bridge – eh?! I already tried 2 phpBB3 bridges but they didn’t work. One locked me completely out so I had to manually disable the plugin in order to let me into the admin areas. I guess the 2 user databases causes headaches to the bridges. How can I continue here – what’s the correct way of bringing this together?

Problem 2: I’ve got my old Gallery1 as well which I need to somehow connect to my actual WP database without losing the user connections to the albums. How can I continue here – what’s the correct way of bringing this together?

Anyone got some exp and ideas here for me? ??

  • Hi Space-rat,

In these days I’m trying to do the same conversion you did. I’ve been searching via Google but didn’t find the infos to move data to WP (mostly users).

Can you give me a few hints to narrow the search or pass the link if you still have it?

You say “…had to do some manual DB tweaks…”, are they just to fix the appearance of the posts or something more related to the importing of the posts?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Eisgeist,

Guess I used that one: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/3398

That one isn’t online anymore: https://tobid.wordpress.com/2008/11/16/geeklog-importer/

Important was that this script only works with WP2.x! Any my Geeklog install is an older version as well, not the latest one. I still didn’t have a final solution for combining WP, Gallery & PHPBB users…. stuck somewhere but four your postings & users -> no problem.

My tweaks were just cosmetic like putting in or replacing some of these “read more” tags because they’re different in WP then in GL. And had some “Umlaut”-problems as well, stupid german stuff ??

Much succes! Maybe you can leave here a posting after you’re done to help others….
