• I am redoing a wp site that will have a new theme and major changes. How will the current live wp installation be affected when the new site is moved from local host to the live server? Should I delete that current one first (or store it in a folder on the server) before I move the new one in? I will definitely back up the original site, whatever I end up doing. I was originally going to use Duplicator to move the site to local host and then move it back to the live site. Now I am thinking it makes more sense just to build it from scratch locally and then move from local to live to replace what’s there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • You don’t need to move the live site on the local server.

    1. Using ftp on your local machine or using cpanel you can download the particular WordPress file from live server. After making changes in it you can upload it back to live server.

    2. If you want to make changes in the dashboard, then you can login into dashboard using wp-admin. For example:

    https://www.mysite.com/wp-admin

It is advised to take backup of your site, before making changes in any file.

Yes, I realize I could do that but pretty much everything is going to change on the new site except for a few articles which I can easily cut and paste. It is a real estate site and we are changing to a more professional, commercial template. I am thinking it is easier just to start from scratch because the old site that I am replacing is a mess. It has been worked on by a variety of people over the years and basically needs to be totally revamped. Hence, I was going to rebuild it locally and replace what is there now.
