I’m working on a rebuild for a well-established magazine website, and part of the rebuild is moving it to a new (hopefully more malware-proof) server. But the uploads folder is believe it or not, over 11GB. Moving this over via FTP would take approximately forever, if if zipped and extracted later. I don’t have forever. I have a few days.

Any suggestions on how I might move these files over quickly? I’m sure quick in this case is still going to take a while, but I’ll take what I can get.

    Thanks
    Stacey

is the website already in WordPress?

It is in wordpress, but the admin is locked out after a hacking last week. I have everything else built out, database moved over, etc. It’s just the uploads left.

You need to move the folder via SSH. Do you have SSH access to both servers?

If so, use the unix/linux protocol scp

scp copies folders and files many times faster than FTP, because it is a direct connection between two servers. See https://kb.iu.edu/d/agye for examples.

SSH. That’s shell stuff, yes? TBH, this is foreign territory for me. I wouldn’t be surprised to find I have access on one, but the older host is a bit…stingy when it comes to those sorts of things. I’ll take a look and see if I get anywhere.

    Thanks

Seems I was right: jailed access on the new server, not even a whif of it unless you have a VPS on the other.

Might ask the new host if they can migrate the folder for you, if both hosts might be that cooperative.

Or, as a test, try and move a few full size images and then run the regenerate thumbnails plugin to see if the correct thumbs will be remade on the new server.
