    With reference to:

    section 9 says:

    Before you start, check the your plugins will work in the network installation. If a plugin is not supported, do not install it. Find suitable alternatives for it by searching for the plugin’s function with “multisite” or even “mu”, as in “social bookmarking plugin wordpress multisite”.

    Copy the theme and plugin files from your old WP installs to their respective directories in the new wp-content. You can activate themes for the network, or you can go to Superadmin > Sites, then click edit on the site you want, and enable a given theme for just that site.

    Note: if you are using a child theme, copy both parent and child themes to the new site.

    Where is this content pasted into? the blogs.dir folder?

    If the subdomains are virtual how does this work?

    It works the same way as single site WordPress. Themes, by default, live in /wp-content/themes. You’ll need to make sure that all your theme files are in that folder. This applies even with subdomains.

    and same for plugins? what if i9 want different plugin settings and files for each sub domain?

    Plugins go in wp-content/plugins, just like normal.

    If you NETWORK activate a plugin, all sites have it on and cannot turn it off. Otherwise they can turn plugins on and off as they want. In both cases, they can configure things as they want.

    so for exmaple when i activate the pagelines platform pro theme in a secondary site it has none of the custom fonts,colors, images etc defined in the same theme in the primary site – so where is this new config for the theme stored? and how can i use common settings for the secondary site? – thanks again for your help

    Probably in your database somewhere, but that is something you should ask the theme shop.

    Using 2011 as an example, if I activate it on a secondary site, it has nothing configured, but all the options are still there. And this is exactly what you should expect. If the theme has a way to copy configurations to a new install of WP, then you can use that. Otherwise, yeah, it’s a manual pain in the tush.

    I checked, and Replicator (https://wpebooks.com/replicator/ – costs $36) can copy all your settings to a new site.
