• Have you got an hour or so? My old host gave me bad service for about a year and then last weekend, there was a fire at the main datacenter and my server was affected.

    Long story short.

I opened an account with a new host, FTP’d a complete backup to the new host. Now my files are all there but I have a problem. The database has the old username. I need to change the MySQL to the new username.

I’ve been told I have to dump it and then restore to the new username, ergo new MySQL database name. Can somebody out there help me do that?

I’ve read up on it but what I’m reading is like it’s a program within cPanel and you enter something and that dumps it and then you import it into the new database. Dear God, I don’t really know what the hell I’m talking about.

  • One of my sites has also been affected by the Houston fire… although the host is one of the most reliable companies I’ve ever seen. The fire itself is not a cause for changing hosts.

As for your question: did you make a backup of your old database, I mean the database at the old host? If not, and you still have access to it, you should do it immediately. All your content (posts, Pages, comments etc.) are NOT in files but in the database.

I did, indeed. In fact, all my files are at the new host. But, along with the new host is a new username. My database has the old username and that is the problem. How do I change the name of the database?

You don’t change the name of the database.
You edit the wp-config .php file with your new data.

Actually, I am not sure which “username” are you talking about. The general site admin username (that comes from every host) has NOTHING to do with your WP blog. Ever.

I’m talking about cPanel. I’m talking about MySQL database. From what I’ve read, you have to MySQLdump the data and then import it back into your new database.

Well it does have something to do with the blog. The blog has a database. If you move the database to another host/server, the name will change because the new host gives you a new username.
