Can you advise what happens in situations where a site running BP is backed up using a plugin like BackupBuddy or Duplicator, and then migrated to a development server for work to be done on it, or the other way around?

The API key is presumably stored in your database and is tied to a domain.

What happens when the domain name changes under the circumstances described, so that in effect there is a duplicate domain name under the same API key?

Similarly, what would happen if the same API key was used on different live domains?

What I have been doing is to deactivate the plugin as soon as the clone is activated on my localhost VM, but wondering if I should be deactivating the plugin on the live site prior to making a migration backup so that it is in the deactivated state when the localhost version is brought up?

    Thanks

    Guy

At the moment, we do not enforce the one domain per key rule, although that will be changing in the near future.

When we do begin enforcing that restriction, your API key will only work from the domain on which it was registered. If you attempt to use it on another domain it won’t work, so your site will fail back onto using the math captcha, and you will receive no more than one email per day letting you know about the issue until it is resolved.

The latest version of BP will detect when you are on a local environment, and will allow all local connections and will not allow you to generate an API key until you go live

Ok, thanks. Question is resolved as marked, but you might also consider putting a few of the common Q & A’s in an FAQ tab ??
