Migration from single installation to multisite

  • Hi

    I have a single installation of WordPress working on a live site perfectly.

    On a test domain I have succesfully installed WordPress and created a network so that I can test out the functionality etc.

    I know want to ‘convert’ my live installation to multisite without losing significant downtime. I am running a news aggregator template so there are no posts or comments but rather all widgets (117 of them!)

    I would be grateful for any advice on the best way forward.

    Yes. You can do it in 5 minutes.

    The only ‘downtime’ would be if you’re using subfolders, as it would bump ‘out’ your posts from domain.com/2011/02/postname (for example). If you use subdomains, no downtime at all.

    Which document should I be following in order to this? I used ‘Create a Network‘ to create the new multisite version as a test.

    Is it Migrating Multiple Blogs into WordPress 3.0 Multisite or is some other routine? Five minutes sounds reaaly quick!

    Of course you could just turn the live site into a network. Otherwise export/import is a rapid option.

    I have tried import/export across to the test site but unfortunately because of the nature of my site is it built using 117 widgets all of which do not come across.

    If I turned live into a network would I lose the widgets and which documentation should I follow?

    Ah yes, themes, widgets, plugins, etc. are things that do not go with an export. An export is just the database. I don’t know if there’s a way to transfer a website including widgets settings, etc. (A backup won’t save it either I guess.)

    I have never tried to turn a live website into a network, but I can hardly imagine that this would sweep settings. Perhaps you can try this on your (or another) test install. Just make a test install, activate a few plugins and widgets, activate the network option and see what happens. It’s an interesting experiment. I’d be interested in the findings ??

    WordPress Multisite has two options: Sites as subdomains (i.e. sitename.domain.com) or sites as subfolders (i.e. domain.com/sitename)

    IF you use subfolders, your MAIN site will change URLs to have /blog/ in there.
