Migration produces unstable results

I am a Professor teaching WordPress. My students turn in their assignments to me using Duplicator. Some odd behavior has been appearing in the last month. When I migrate their work to my localhost it works just fine. Using the same archive and installer on their machines often errors before step 1. Error is cannot find archive. However the same archive and installer that I just used is definitely their in a localhost domain.
