I attempted to alter the submit button and the wording on a password protected page. I went into the ftp wp-includes & post-template.php. Made the changes. All SEEMED well. The site came up and the changes stuck BUT… now I canNOT get back in the dashboard/editor for my website. Can’t even bring up the page. I get the proper url but with the following message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/thegreat/public_html/wp-includes/post-template.php on line 1135

I had made a copy of the post-template.php page B4 I started working just in case. When the screw up occurred, I deleted the page I’d worked on and changed the name of the original file back (deleting the “copy”) and… now… nada. Line 1135 is the very same (from my eyes exactly) as was the original.

I do love learning experiences, but… I’d dead without the ability to add/edit.

Any wisdom will be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks.
    I appreciate you.

If all you have done is edit a few files then just replace them with ones from a WordPress zip download of the same version.

No, actually I have done a TON of pages & posts— all in preparation to open a membership site. Now, you’re scaring me but good <smile>.

Not like losing a child, but…

    Thanks.
    I appreciate you.

Okay, am I being dense (name’s fogg, so that’s possible), my sense from your reply was replacing ALL the files. Are there some “specific” replacements that will work?

    Thanks again.
    I appreciate you (again).

And now I get this on the website itself:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/thegreat/public_html/wp-includes/post-template.php on line 1135

    Mama! What a mess <smile>

My question to you is are you not able to go to any part of your site? I want to see a link. Try remaning .htaccess. I did that before when I was unable to get into wordpress. Called Godaddy and they told me that one.

    Thread Starter JohnMiltonFogg

    (@johnmiltonfogg)

    Nope, nothing: https://thegreatestnetworker.org/

Try remaning .htaccess. I take it you mean reNaming— yes? And “where” is that to be done (maybe how to…)

Sorry, again, to be so dense…

    Thanks.

I “see” .htaccess on the root on the server. So, give it a new name THEN what? Leave it like that?

    venomtdub

    (@venomtdub)

Yes renaming. I renamed mine to htaccess1 and then I was able to get back into my site. You can always rename it back if you need to. Just try it and see if that helps. I called godaddy and they told me to try that, and it worked for my site.

    (@johnmiltonfogg)

And what effect does renaming that file have on going forward— for the future?

AND, just tried that and… nope. Mama.

    (@mrmist)

Ok.. The Pages and Posts that you have written are seperate from the actual files that you upload. The Pages & Posts are in the database, so they are safe. You could upload a new copy of the WordPress zip using your FTP and that will replace the files that you have edited.

For reference, it is not a good idea to alter core files such as post-template, as your changed would be destroyed every time you update WordPress.

    (@johnmiltonfogg)

mist & fogg, something fun about that.

First, thanks for your help. I really appreciate that & you.

So, I take it all the work done done on the theme (Infinity-Remix) remains and what’s being replaced in the WordPress Classic & Default files— is that correct?

AND, what can you/me do about altering a “submit” button to read “send” or putting another line of copy on that (for example) password protected page that really needed for the user? Seems crazy to me that that cannot be done, much less done with ease.

    Thanks again.
    I appreciate you.

    mrmist

    (@mrmist)

Yes if you upload the standard zip file over the top of your install, it will replace the normal core files (including classic and default) but not your custom theme. (Though it’s worth taking a copy of your changed files for backup purposes anyway.)

Afraid I cannot help with changing the submit text. If you search around someone may have made a plugin for customised password protection or similar, or you could start a new thread in the plugin and hack forum stating your request, to see if you get help there with that.

Thanks mrmist for your guidance and (although I’m not sure of your background in psychology <smile>) helping me feel better & more secure.

I’m taking your advice (hopefully to the bank, too)

    Thanks again.
    I appreciate you.

I just wanted to say thank you for this post – it was a life saver for me. Having enough anxiety trying to do this and thinking I had lost the entire site was devastating.

I am a newbie but learning fast that WordPress and the community of people involved here are FANTASTIC!

Thanks Fogg for messing up before I did – lol

    Thanks so very much,
    Karle
