mimicing the old reader

  • The website of our local paper natchezdemocrat.com is really terrible, filled with ads, popups, and a frenetic background. I decided to create a rss based site to let folks scan the paper’s headline and reach what they wanted to read. I’m partially there BUT; I can only show 10 results with the headline and an excerpt. When you click the headline you’re sent to the paper’s site.
    On theoldreader.com with the same rss url you can get a list of 58 headlines (no excerpt) which when clicked on gives you the full content from the old reader NOT the paper’s site.
    I’ve tried several plugins and the default rrs widget and cannot work it out.
    Can someone please help me?

    You’re collecting the feed from natchezdemocrat and displaying it on your site? Are you able alter the feed from natchezdemocrat? You cannot do more than the site sends out. If excerpts are sent, you cannot display full text.

    Feeds shouldn’t send all that many posts in one request. Feed readers typically collect the feed data over time and develop a history which you can access without going back to the source.

    Post links from feeds would naturally lead back to the source. If you’re keeping a history of feed posts (assuming the feed sends full content) and want link to that instead, you would need to alter how your site outputs feed content, substituting your site’s links for the usual source links. Similarly, if you have collected full content and want that displayed instead of excerpts, alter how your site outputs feed content. This can be done by modifying the template used to generate the output.

    Thank you for your response. The site does in fact send full content and theoldreader downloaded more than 50 upon the initial opening of the account. It displays both the title and an excerpt which when clicked opens the full content from its own cache.
    It does appear that I have just found a workaround in WPeMatico which does convert the responses into posts that display an excerpt and expands to full content on click. The full content comes from eMatico rather than the newspaper site. It too only downloads a max of 10 on each download but that may be the best I can do. I’ll just need to figure out how to send those posts to a destination different from my regular ones. I’m sure I’ll find a way to do that. Thank you again.
