• Last night I turned on WD Total Cache’s Minify for HTML/XML, CSS, and JS, with “update external files” and “garbage collection” set to every 24 hours.

This sped up my site a lot, but in the 10 hours it’s been active, it has increased my hourly GPU use by 3–20x. YIKES. In the 10 hours minify has been running it has become the third largest user of GPU for the last month.

The offending file is /wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/pub/minify.php. I have disabled minify again, but I’m already on track to double my daily average GPU use for <10 hours of minify.

What’s going on? How can I fix this? I would really like my site to be nice and fast, but the overages this would cause would cost me hundreds of dollars a month.

  • So to be clear you are saying that even when minify is off you are still seeing an inordinate amount of cpu usage?

I wonder if w3tc’s page cache/minify cron jobs are running every xx hours and going about invalidating every single page (and remaking) which would most certainly cause a dramatic amount of cpu and data usage.

Have you tried changing the updates and collecting to say 1 week instead of 24hours? Would be very interesting if that lowered the cpu usage.
