Minimum weight of images – save space on server

  • Hello,

    I’m using a child theme of twenty twelve.

    I’ve noticed that when I upload an image, WP makes 6 copies! I guess that this is because it serves different sizes for mobile devices? Is that correct?

    Is there any way of reducing this or is it just the way wp does things?

    Before I upload my original I convert it to a 72dpi jpeg and resize it to a max width or height of 1000px.This means that the original is about 500 to 600k. Would I be able to reduce this without losing noticeable quality when viewing on a decent monitor?
