• I am looking to create a Mirror multisite on my server. I want to make a duplicate site that I can test new functions before I transfer over to the live site.

What is the best way to block search engines from crawling my mirror site?

Is this even a good idea?

I was going to use a localserver but due to many different server options I want to test all functions on the current server I use.

Put password protection on it. Most hosts provide a GUI for setting this up in your hosting control panel.

Or on your dev site, just change the privacy option in the backend on the main blog.

    It blocks search engines.

Actually, I do this all the time on my dev sites that I use to test things & make examples of.

    Turn on privacy?

Settings -> Privacy: I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors

I think all that does is add a nofollow, noindex meta tag, right? Just keep in mind that this method still wouldn’t prevent someone from linking to and viewing your site if they happened to have the URL.

Of I used a password protection plugin that should pretty much take care of it. I would think.

True, but all the OP said was search engines ?? this does nofollow and the robots.txt so as fast as that goes, it’s built in ??
