  • Hi!

It seems your website uses a plugin that enables 2FA. WordPress doesn’t have that by default.

Do you have acces to FTP or the database?
If yes, try manually deactivating your plugin (no Dashboard access required) using one of the two methods listed below (also described here).

    1. Deactivate your plugin via FTP or the file manager provided in your host’s control panel.

    • Navigate to the wp-contents/plugins folder
    • Rename the folder of the plugin you think it might be related to security.
    • Go to Dashboard > Plugins and you’ll see the “missing” plugin has been disabled.

    2. Use phpMyAdmin to deactivate all plugins.

    • In the table wp_options, under the option_name column find the active_plugins field. (The table prefix of wp_ may be different if you changed it when installing)
    • On this row, change the option_value field to: a:0:{}. Save the changes and this will deactivate all plugins.
    • Then from Dashboard > Plugins you need to reactivate all plugins, except the one causing you troubles.

If you don’t have acces to any of these, please contact your hosting provider to give you this kind of access.

    Hope this helps,
    Kind regards!

/log-in is definitely not a default login URL. It’s created by a security related plugin among with that 2FA.

    Hey, Vlad T!

    Thanks for that.

    This worked:
    Navigate to the wp-contents/plugins folder
Rename the folder of the plugin you think it might be related to security.
Go to Dashboard > Plugins and you’ll see the “missing” plugin has been disabled.

It was my WordFence plugin. I renamed the folder wordfence1 and was able to log in. Is this plugin useless now? I’ve relied on this for security for years.

I renamed the folder back to it’s original name while logged in, activated the WordFence plugin again and removed 2FA. It’s not ideal, but at least I’m able to use my site again, so thank you very much for the assist! ??

    I’m glad it’s working now!
As for WordFence, I’m using it on all of the sites I manage and so far 2FA worked fine, so it must be either something wrong (an incomplete update of the plugin) with the copy of your plugin or a setting of its own.

I suggest reinstalling a fresh copy of the plugin from https://w.org/plugins/wordfence and if the issue occurs again I recommend asking at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wordfence/ so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

    Regards!

Couldn’t this be related to the theme I’m using? I’m using Primer, which is very basic, and I haven’t seen a theme update for ages.

Then again, it might be updating automatically and I’m not paying much attention to the WordFence spam about this and that having been updated.

I doubt a theme alters 2FA functionality, but it could create some conflicts. WordFence folks can tell you more – they might know if there are any issues with a certain theme.

Right on. Well, thanks a bunch for the help, Vlad. You saved the day! ??

    My pleasure!
PS: You still have apx 20 mins to edit your original topic if you want to remove the domain name of your website from those URLs, as those are public. The “Site I need help with” field however is not for public eyes. ??

Cheers! I wasn’t aware any of that stuff was “danger zone.” ??

I imagine that while doing step #3 Panic you didn’t have time to read https://www.ads-software.com/support/forum-user-guide/faq/#my-post-shows-up-on-a-search-for-my-domain-will-you-delete-my-post-or-my-link ?? Now you know.

Oh yeah, for real. All the blood drained from my face and I went into “seek help” mode like a wounded dog. I go to people, not guides! LOL

    EDIT: Thanks for lookin’ out!
