I just upgraded from 2.0.11 to 2.3 and now my categories are missing as well as the author of the post, however, they appear to remain just fine in the database.

    Have a look: https://www.finlandforthought.net

Notice that all my old posts are listed as “uncategorized”, except for the recent posts I’ve written since the upgrade, which are filed under “12”. And notice that the post author’s name (there are several authors on this blog) is missing from the post. Also notice there are no categories on my sidebar, only one listed as “12”.

When I ran upgrade, WP threw a bunch of database errors, yet the upgrade appeared to work. I’m guessing that the database upgrade to 2.3 had failed – Is there a way I can manually check this? Like I said, all the categories and users in my database appear to be just fine.

Just a note: I’m using MySQL v5.0.x, and all my plugins are disabled except Akismet.

Any ideas what the hell went wrong? ?? thanks!!!!!!

  • Hello,

I’ve got the exact same issue : most of my posts appear as “uncategorized”. I started a thread yesterday and logged a support ticket.

No matter how much memory is increased, the upgrade process to 2.3.x does not complete properly.

Yeah, another guy told me it was a memory issue. I have my own server with 1G RAM and not much running on it. I rebooted it before I did the upgrade, it didn’t help.

    Here’s my problem…

When I upgraded from 2.0.11 to 2.3, the database upgrade didn’t complete. So I have 2.3 code with an old database and things are messed up.

How do I run the database upgrade again?

Ahh, okay, I found a variable in the “options” table called “db_version” which is set to: 6124

I switched it to 6123 and attempted upgrade again, it said the db was out of date so I ran the upgrade. It was successful, but didn’t help.

So I fixed the missing authors problem – The db upgrade added a new column in the ‘users’ table called ‘display_name’. This was left blank for my users.

Just go into the control panel, edit each user, and select their display_name from the drop down menu.

About my categories disappearing – It appears that WP handles categories differently in the database. There’s now these 3 “terms” tables.

When I upgraded to v2.3 it seems to have created these tables but didn’t convert the old “categories” tables to them. So looks like I’ll have to try and do that manually.

How many posts have you got ? This is going to take forever :-/
