Yesterday I changed the categories of about 50 posts from a “premium” category which made them only visible to people who signed up to a membership on my site to a more general category that makes them visible to all visitors. That seemed to work fine and those posts are now visible.
This morning I got a message from Google search saying that I had a critical issue and that there was a missing field “itemListElement” in my breadcrumbs structured data.
I first of all tried the Health check and Troubleshooting plugin, and found that even with a default theme and no plugins, Google still saw the same issue. I have WP-Rocket and so I cleared the cache.
I then added the Yoast Test plugin and cleared the Indexable tables and rebuilt the configuration of Yoast. I just ran the Google test again and have the same issue.
Any idea what is now causing this and what I can do to fix it?

    Hi @steheap,

    Thanks for reaching out.

The error of missing field “itemListElement” is usually related to the breadcrumb schema output used for rich results. You may want to check if you’ve set the correct breadcrumb title for that post or page.

Can you please edit the post/page and navigate to the Yoast SEO metabox > within the SEO tab > click on the Advanced section > and add the title for the breadcrumb. You can also follow the steps at our Help Center here: https://yoast.com/help/the-breadcrumbs-title-setting/. Then check if the issue exists.

Once after adding the Breadcrumb title to the homepage, kindly clear the cache from caching plugins, the server, and CDN like Cloudflare. If you are not sure how to clear the cache from a plugin, please contact the plugin author. If you’d like to clear the cache from the server, please speak to your host provider.

If the issue persists after following the above steps, please follow the steps in this guide: https://yoast.com/help/google-search-console-breadcrumb-schema-report/.

Thanks for this response. As far as I can tell from the Google error message and illustration of the page it occurs, it is on the home page of my site, which is set to show posts. I’m not sure you can edit this page as such?

I also looked in the most recent post and found the area you mention in the Advanced section, but I don’t have a breadcrumbs field to complete on that post.

I also looked at Search Appearance in the main menu the Home Page I have a SEO title, a Meta Description that is completed, but no breadcrumbs section there. The next section in Search Appearance is Social Settings and Social Title.

I also checked the Breadcrumbs section of Search Appearance. Apart from the Separator, nothing else is completed on this page and Breadcrumbs for the theme is disabled. I don’t recall ever visiting or changing anything on this page.

    Hello Steve,

I’m sorry the issue persists. Can you change the Knowledge Graph & Schema.org from Organization to Person and back or vice versa? Also, have you added an image for person/organization logo?

    Thread Starter steheap

    (@steheap)

I did that just now. I didn’t have a photo for the logo in the past, but I added it when these issues started and I rebuilt the configuration in Yoast. I added the image then.

I just cleared my cache and tried the Google test again – still the same issue. One critical issue with the Breadcrumbs.

Is there a way to remove Yoast and this problem section of the landing page of my website and then reinstall it? Or is there anything in the Yoast Tools area that will clear this and allow me to recreate it?

I just checked my Google search console and I still have the issue listed as a critical error on my home page. So I’m assuming the bug is still there.
