Missing footer & dashboard links

    My Problems:
    1) Site has no footer on Pages, though the footer does appear on the Blog Posts (you should be able to see this)
    2) When logged in, I can see the dashboard, but after I view a Page, there’s no link back to it – not on top or on the left side except on the Blog page
    (3) This problem was remedied by undoing the accessibility feature: I used to be able to drag the buttons on the Widget page, but now I have links to “add” or “edit”)

    What I’ve done to try to remedy the problem:
    1) went into files with cpanel to see what files have been changed since the problem happened (only a handful of pages had changed in the template area – it’s a customized template that my friend wants.)
    2) downloaded the template files from the creators site & checked all the changed pages to the original pages, except the footer.php which is working on the Blog page (just added the RSS feed link which is working)
    3) Reinstalled WordPress 3.3.1
    4) Searched everywhere for an answer

    What I had done that could have caused the problem:
    1) Installed and uninstalled and deleted a couple of plugins (the default plugins are still there, but none are activated – I also renamed my plugin folder to see if there were any error messages, but I didn’t see anything
    2) A blog post had been added by my friend but wasn’t showing, so I set the name of the main blog post since the site is using Pages for the rest of the site (that’s when I noticed that I couldn’t drag widgets, because I was trying to put a blog archive widget in the sidelinks – I couldn’t add it to the main sidebar widget area – the template has other widget pages so I put it in one of those and it worked for the Blog page, though I couldn’t make blogrolls work in the sidebar on Pages.)
    3) Changed user settings to allow subscriptions
    4) Not sure if I made other minor changes in settings.

  • It’s tough to say without looking at your source files. was the footer present on the other pages at one point? It’s entirely possible that the footer area that you are missing isn’t included on those page templates.

    The Welcome page is dated 2/20/12, so it’s been a few weeks that it was working right. The footer and the dashboard links were there before I went in today. I had set up the Pages with the Reading Settings set to “Front page displays a static page” and the Posts page unset for several weeks before my friend finally decided to make a blog post. I had to create a Page called “Blog” to point blog posts to in the settings and also have the Posts show up in the navigation. It’s not just the footer that is missing now; it’s the dashboard links, too.

    Thanks for the inquiry to help, but that didn’t help. If you have other suggestions, I’d appreciate it.

    I’ve taken photos of the Dashboard problem.

    Here’s a photo of my home page while I’m logged in – the top area and right side where the dashboard links should be are gray.

    Here’s a photo of my Blog Post page while logged in – no side links, but I do have top links to edit it and you can see from the link in the original message that it does have a footer.

    When I log in, I get a regular dashboard like the one shown on this page.

    WOnder if you are getting some sort of JS/CSS conflict with another plugin or even theme function. Have you tried disabling all plugins?

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    Thank you for your suggestions. I have no plugins activated and I did rename the plugin folder just in case, but it didn’t help. Next I will try replacing the wp-admin and if that doesn’t work, then the wp-includes. I have downloaded a fresh version. I don’t understand why my reloading the entire software wouldn’t have done that, though. I don’t have the Twenty Eleven theme enabled, but that would be my last try if the others don’t work. I’ll get back here to let you know if one of those solutions worked.

    Reloading wp-admin and wp-includes resulted in no change. Activating Twenty Eleven gave me the WordPress footer (not our customized footer). It showed the admin tool bar on all the pages, but no side links. Should it have shown me side links when viewing pages while logged in? Switching back to my custom template, I can’t see the admin toll bar on the pages or a side link, but I had seen that previously. What’s my next step to debug this?

    I’m now done a complete uninstall and reinstall of the theme, but no change. I tried theme Twenty Ten and had no admin links or toolbar on any page, not even the blog page and no footers of any kind.

    Can we please see your site using the Twenty Eleven theme?

    OK it’s got it now. I don’t know how you can compare it to my other theme. All of the customization is in the other theme. There’s no sidebar in this theme. No custom footer. It reorganizes my menu. Am I supposed to see side tool bar for admin when I’m viewing the pages in this theme or only the top tool bar? I had a side tool bar with the other theme that I don’t have with this one, but I do have a top admin toolbar on every page now, whereas it had broken with the other theme except on the blog page which was working fine.

    I appreciate any suggestions you might have.

    The whole point of the exercise is to confirm or rule out factors. Troubleshooting is always a process of elimination. Since the Twenty Eleven theme is behaving exactly as it should do, this means that the issue is within your current theme. You may need to contact the theme’s developer about it.

    Solution: broken Facebook code in widget. Fixed! Thanks for everyone’s help in helping me diagnose this. Any suggestions for a php/html code error detector would be appreciated. I know someone had a Firefox plugin, but don’t remember what it was called.
