I accidentally deleted a WordPress user on our site without realizing that his account was linked to many of the product images in the WooCommerce store. I was able to restore the user by restoring a previous database backup using Updraft Plus however all of those product images associated with that user are gone. Is there a way to restore those product images? For now, I have been able to locate the original missing image paths for the products and upload the images (from my backup) back into their original folders (in the Uploads directory) via FTP. This seems to have worked in that the missing product images on the site do display properly again but when I view those products in the WooCommerce dashboard, the images are still missing. So they are showing on the site but not visible in the dashboard anymore. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

  • Hi there @studio544

It’s great that you’ve been able to restore the user and re-upload the images via FTP, however, the images still do not show in the WooCommerce dashboard.

Here are some of my suggestions:
    1. Kindly try to switch your theme to a WooCommerce default theme in the meantime, such as Storefront, and see if the images are still showing both from the dashboard and the site. If it’s working, that means there was a problem with the theme you deactivated.
    2. Try to flush the permalinks, going to SettingsPermalinks and click the “Save Changes” button without making any changes. This action will refresh the permalinks structure and usually resolves image-related issues.

    Before you start

Please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. Most hosting companies have this included in the subscription, but you could also consider using a service like?Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.

If the issue persists, please share with us a copy of your site’s System Status Report so that we can better understand your site’s current environment. You can find this by navigating to WooCommerceStatus → select “Get system report” → “Copy for support”., and then paste it here.

Thank you for the suggestions, Darla. I appreciate it. The theme was never deactivated on the site so I don’t think that would be the issue. I can try to flush the permalinks as you suggested but am a little concerned about what might happen if I do that. Do you think that could lead to duplicate images appearing on the site since I’ve already manually uploaded those missing images back to their original directories in the Uploads folder via FTP?

    Thanks for getting back!

Don’t worry! Flushing your permalinks won’t affect your images or their directories. When you manually uploaded those missing images back to their original directories in the folder via FTP, you essentially restored them to their original state. Flushing the permalinks will not create duplicate images. It only refreshes the links to your content.

However, if you’re still worried about potential issues, we recommend you take a full backup of your site before making any changes. This way, you can always revert to the previous state if something unexpected occurs.

Please let us know how it went.

    Cheers,

Thanks. I re-saved the permalinks structure as you suggested and then cleared the cache of the site and can report that this did <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>not </span>fix the situation with the missing product images inside of the WooCommerce dashboard. As I mentioned earlier, the images do display correctly on the site itself since I manually uploaded them via FTP but WooCommerce is not recognizing them within the dashboard itself. When I go to edit one of these products inside of WooCommerce, I basically see empty spaces with the alt tags and a question mark where the images should be displaying. It is like the program knows they are there but is unable to actually display the images in the plugin.

The other thing I noticed is that when I directly re-uploaded the missing product images via FTP to their original folders, the variations of those original images (in various sizes) were not created so I am finding sections in the online store such as with the recommended products where many of those images are missing even though they are displaying on the actual product pages. I am not seeing any easy way to correct these issues without having to go into each product in WooCommerce and re-assign photos again so the thumbnails and other multiple-sized images can be re-created with them. I had thought about trying another plugin such as Velvet Blues to see if that might help to update the URL’s for the product images. Any thoughts?

    Hi there @studio544 ??

having to go into each product in WooCommerce and re-assign photos again so the thumbnails and other multiple-sized images can be re-created with them.

That is because WordPress, by default, will make three copies of any image you upload. Each of these copies is a different size and correspond to the Thumbnail, Medium, and Large image sizes you can select in WordPress. Themes and plugins can also increase the number of copies created.

If there is a file backup available, along with a database backup, from the time before deleting the user, the two can be utilized for restoring that point in time. That can be useful for restoring the data, avoiding the laborious one-to-one re-uploading, before deleting the user again (but not along with the product data).

Important: Depending on how backups are kept, orders that were placed meanwhile, along with other information written in the database, might be overwritten. Therefore, making sure a backup is made before going ahead with such restores helps save much time and effort.

Have you considered Jetpack Backups? Even if you have backups through your host, they are often laborious and technically complex to restore, so we built a one-click option that does it for you. Of specific value to WooCommerce store owners is the ability to restore your site to any past state while keeping all orders and products current.

Thank you for your feedback Pepe. I appreciate it. Luckily there were not a huge number of products with missing photos so I did end up reassigning their images through WooCommerce directly. We did not use Jetpack Backups but a different backup plugin and now also have a daily backup option through the hosting company.

Glad to hear Pepe’s suggestion helped! ??

I will mark the thread as solved. If you have a few minutes, we’d love it if you could leave us a review at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/woocommerce/reviews/
