So i have a site still on WP 3.2. I have been afraid of upgrading it because i foolishly did not create a child theme when i put it together last year. I am afraid i will break it if i upgrade. I know i changed the content of several files when i put it together but can no longer remember which ones i messed with. How do i now go about creating a child theme without screwing something up? Do i just grab all files in my current theme and copy them into my new child theme and them download a fresh copy of WP3.2 to use as my untouched theme? After that, i should then be able to move up to WP3.5 right? Please advise.

Just noticed something that may help out. After changing back to the child, i went to Appearance/header from WP admin page and noticed that everything is now defaulted to standard 2011 theme. I then switched back to the parent and noticed my custom pics and text colors were there. Is this what the issue is? Do i have to reconfigure after i switch to child theme?

If the things that are not showing up are things that you changed using theme options (i.e. header image), those won’t show up in a child theme – you have to redo them.

If it’s changes to the style.css file that are not showing up, you might just have an error in your CSS that can cause that to happen. Unfortunately, it’s really hard to help with things like this without seeing the site. You can try to find errors by validating the CSS – but be forewarned that there are existing “errors” in the CSS code which are not a problem. If you see “Parse” error in the code you’ve changed that would be a possible problem.

Thanks Yogi. Thats exactly what it was. I had to redo the the changes i had made to the theme. Now that all that is done, i will now attempt to upgrade to WP 3.5.1. I hope that goes well……

Yep, well good job on sorting through all this. If you have problems, just start a new thread and someone can help you out.

I successfully upgraded to 3.51 this morning. Thanks again Yogi.
