• I recently moved my site onto a new server about a month ago, and have yet been able to get the Permalinks working correctly. I have an .htaccess file in the directory, and when the permissions are set to anything but 777, WordPress tells me to add the re_write rules myself. I do that, and NOTHING.

So then, I modify the .htaccess file to permissions with 777 and then update the Permalinks again. Still nothing.

I have checked out the httpd.conf file in the etc/httpd/conf folder, and it seems that mod_rewrite is enabled.

Please help, I really have no idea what I am doing, and this is as far as I can get. What am I missing?

  • 1) Are you on Windows or Linux hosting?
    2) Also in your previous post, you mentioned mu.wordpress – Are you working on single WP now or still working on WordPress MU?

I converted it to a wordpress.mu a few months ago, and thats why I need this to get buddypress working. I took this same process before, (When I converted), and I had no issues. That was before I switched servers.

The new server that I am running on uses Centro OS which I believe is a Linux hosting thing.

Where are you hosted? There’s Linux and Windows Centro in different hosting plans. And yes, clearly you need to get your permalinks working before getting into BuddyPress plus .htaccess should not be CHMOD 777 at all. AllowOverride needs to be set to All in the Apache *.conf file — look for VirtualHost directive changing “AllowOverride None” to “AllowOverride FileInfo Options” for the directory that the .htaccess file resides in. Are you sure your apache mod_rewrite is enabled?

If that doesn’t help you, there are so many variables involved in setting up WPMU “correctly” that I recommend forums at https://mu.www.ads-software.com/forums/ for more experts to tackle your hosting challenges.

I am being hosted at UltraVPS.com. Its CentOS 5 default.

You mention AllowOverride needs to be set to All in apache *.conf file? are you talking about the httpd.conf file? What file exactly is that? I am kind of picking up everything as I go along, and could use some specific detailng, if possible.

Someone that helped me set up my server, told me it was enabled. I then double checked it, by opening the httpd.conf. it does seem to be enabled.

the wordpress site is set up correctly, other then this htaccess file (permalink) thing.

I am also wondering does it matter what directory I set my website up in? Right now, the website is under its own directory
    * home/zukny/sites/mymorningstory/www/ Everything is in the WWW folder.

Don’t be shy about posting your questions at WPMU forums, https://mu.www.ads-software.com/forums/ I see regular volunteers helping you out there.
