modal in Genesis widget visual editor ?

I have read the Getting Started Guide…

I want to load the modal on select page(s), and have it working fine on a test “page” with a button, to pop out on click. However, in my Genesis child theme, the homepage is built using widgets. In the visual mode of visual editor (where a lot of code resides, including the button that’s supposed to trigger the modal) I see there is a Formats dropdown, but selecting my modal there has no effect, and thus, no pop up on click.

Looking for suggestions, how to resolve. Thanks.
