modern template overlay

Can you tell me a way to deal with this issue I am finding? I have embedded a pdf file into a page. The pdf appears to have a gray cast (overlay) to it (instead of looking white) I switched from the pdf to a png image version and it too looks gray so it is something with the template. I don’t want to remove the ‘overlay’ because that seems to define the content area. I’m trying (trial and error) z-index but haven’t determined yet which sections should be done.
