• Hello,

I’ve been reading all kinds of stuff on URLS and permalinks, and I am new to this…trying to do my own SEO and I cannot figure out for the life of me how to modify my product urls/permalinks so that my keywords match the urls.

    Can someone PLEASE help me??

  • Paul,

You should be able to click the Edit button near the URL on the post page. Check out this image to see what I’m referring to.

If it says “Change Permalinks” instead, click that button and select Post Name, and save that setting. Then, go back to your product and try again.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for your response…when I do edit it in the product page it allows me to edit it, but then it doesn’t change the permalink…it goes right back to the old permalink. Pretty annoying.

Hmm, yes, that would be annoying!

What e-commerce plugin are you using? Do you get the same issue when you try changing the URL on a regular post or page?

I have the Woocommerce Plugin that my webmaster installed. I haven’t tried on other pages, but I will try and do that right away….I have 4/5 products with a yellow SEO dot and I’m almost sure that if I can figure out this permalink/URL link it will turn it to green….!! Thanks for your help.. for now

Chris….I’m back….so this is REALLY annoying….I just tried changing the permalink in another page and it saved it!!!

So it must have something to do with the Woocommerce plugin!! HELP!!

    Paul,

I would suggest starting with the official WC documentation. There may be something there that speaks more specifically to your challenges.

Can you show me a link that you currently have, and what you’d like it changed to? Perhaps you’re trying to change something that’s already set in the Permalinks section.

    My current product name is:

    orange-cinnamon-sea-salt

I would like to change it to:

    orange-&-cinnamon-sea-salt

All I need to do is add the “&”

Ok, that’s your problem. The “&” indicates a variable in URLs, so you won’t be able to use that in the way you’re intending. For SEO purposes, search engines view “orange-cinnamon-sea-salt” and “orange-and-cinnamon-sea-salt” as essentially the same.

So, while your SEO plugin might fuss about it, your URL is quite fine. I’d leave it as-is.

(and, by the way, orange and cinnamon sea salt sounds amazing!)

Good God….I can’t believe it…for something so small. Ok….well….thank you that makes more sense now…I thought I was going to lose my mind…Yes..well, I just started an importing business of Artisanal goods from Italy…just went live about a month ago and trying to save some money doing my own SEO work…that Orange & Cinnamon Sea Salt is actually from Sicily….you can check us out https://www.giannettiartisans.com

Chris, I really appreciate your help!! Moving onto outbound and internal links now…so I may be back!!! Thanks once again!! Have a great weekend!! I

    Glad I could help!
