I moved a number of sites from an NGINX-based host to a Litespeed-based host a month ago and some of my sites are reporting a 90% drop in organic traffic and a corresponding increase in direct traffic (both in UA and GA4). Search Console reports the correct/expected organic traffic so I know it’s an issue with the sites.

I’ve seen threads where people thought it was possibly due to Guest Mode in Litespeed but Guest Mode wasn’t enabled on most of the affected sites. The only thing my affected sites have in common is using Monsterinsights to add GA rather than adding a script directly without a plugin.

Any ideas on how I could narrow down/resolve this? We know the data is wrong, just not exactly why.

    Hi @noisedude,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Sudden direct traffic spikes can happen when the source of a visit is not properly identified due to stripped referral information, improper UTM tagging, redirection issues or incorrect setup of cross-domain tracking.

We don’t currently have reports of a similar issue being caused by MonsterInsights, but if you’re able to share more details with us at https://www.monsterinsights.com/get-help/ our team will be glad to offer ideas and help troubleshoot what you’re seeing your reports as much as we’re able to.

    Thanks!
