In case it makes no difference can you please try a factory reset in Smush > Settings > Data & Settings > Factory reset?

@rainer-r @wpmudevsupport12 thanks for using the plugin. Please note that each “media item” in your library can have multiple sizes so the image count can be higher than your “media item” count. The number is most likely correct.

It seems I misunderstood the issue, I was wondering if the progress bar was showing more than actually, it has, as @khaxan said, WordPress has thumbnails which generate different files for each image, a reference to @khaxan information:

So let’s say your library has 10 images and you are only using the default WordPress image sizes it is going to be 10 * 5 sizes = 50.
