After updating to the latest plugin version (1.42.0), my list of Popular Site Content has broken. Some of the titles are blank while others are in a different language.

A very similar bug happened a year ago as well. Today was the first time I had this issue again since the 1.13.1 fix from last year.

I’m happy to provide Site Health information or anything else you might need to help debug this.

Thanks for reaching out. Sharing your Site Health information indeed would be useful as we try to determine the cause. Along with your Site Health information please share a full screenshot of your top content table (showing the total visits also), within the same form.

Note that we did make changes to how the top content table displays content to rule out duplicate listings in the event there was a title change. Do you recall making any title changes to these content at some stage?

Hi James, thanks for the reply. I’ve just filled out the form with Site Health info and a screenshot of my Top Content.

I made no title changes to any of these Top Content over the past 6 months either.

Many thanks for sharing. As I can’t be sure of the cause I’ll need to check this with the team. Before doing so can you share the following:

    1. At any stage did you have language variations of your content?
    2. When you click on the Analytics link below your top content table do you see any unusual URLs or language references, on the analytics.google.com platform?

    1. I have never had any language variations of my content. It has been English only since day 1 with zero translation or conversion settings.

    2. When I click the Analytics link below my top content table, I do not see any unusual URLs or language references on the analytics.google.com platform. Everything is in English, including all of the top content’s titles.

Thanks for the speedy response, very useful. I’ll check this with the team and report back to you here. Unfortunately I don’t have a timeframe on this but I will keep you posted with any updates.

My pleasure, thank you for your prompt replies as well!

I understand this might take a few days to fix as well, no worries there.

Please let me know if I can provide any more info to help debug the issue too.

Thank you for the assistance! I’ve created the below GitHub issue based on the information you kindly provided:
    https://github.com/google/site-kit-wp/issues/4165

One other check you can perform is checking does the same occur when following the steps below:

    1. Login to your site from a Chrome browser incognito window
    2. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    4. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    5. Reload your Site Kit dashboard once more, checking the “Most popular content” table.

Other than the above please do let me know if you encounter any other dashboard errors when browsing through Site Kit and I can add this to the GitHub issue.

    Thanks for update!

I performed the Health Check & Troubleshooting test and can confirm the weird language bug still occurs after following those 5 steps. While in Troubleshooting mode, the bug is present in the WP dashboard widget, the main Site Kit > Dashboard screen, and the Site Kit > Analytics list of top content.

I have not encountered any further dashboard errors when browsing through Site Kit, both in normal or troubleshooting mode.

Thanks for performing that check, I’ll add those notes to the related GitHub issue. As we’re still unsure of the cause can you confirm the below:

    1. The page titles once translated do match with the correct English language variations?
    2. When you click on a page title in a different language and you’re directed to a “Detailed Page Stats” for that URL is the page title in English f
    3. When you visit of the URLs that have an incorrect title in the “Most popular content” table and use the Site Kit admin toolbar is the language in English?

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

    Thread Starter Steven

    (@shyzer)

    1. It seems the translated titles match with the correct English title. I ran them through Google Translate and there are some expected translation quirks, but I’d say they’re 99% the same and appear to be actual translations.

    2. Your question got cut off, but I think I know what you’re asking. When I go to “Detailed Page Stats,” the correct English appears on most, but not all. For instance, my homepage simply says Home instead of the accurate title of “Hey, It’s Free! ? Best Freebies, Samples, & Daily Deals”

However, my next three top content pages all have the accurate English title (one, two, three)

    3. The page title is 100% accurate and in English via the Site Kit admin toolbar when I visit the URLs in question.

One quick additional note – the weird bug seems to have changed for some of the titles since yesterday.

This is the original screenshot from my initial post yesterday. The first and third items are in Spanish, but the second and fourth items are in correct English

However today, the second item seems to be in Chinese now instead of English while the fourth item has changed to (unknown). Meanwhile, the first and third items are still in Spanish.

@shyzer Thank you so much for these updates; they’re very helpful for our testing! We’re continuing to do some research on our side and will let you know if there’s anything else we need from you.

@shyzer Thanks so much for your patience here! It looks like this issue is related to some changes that we recently made to the underlying logic of the Top Content table. We’ve identified a fix and it should be released by the end of October. I’ll update here when the fix is ready and you should update the plugin.

@shyzer Just to let you know that we just released Site Kit 1.45.0. With that we’ve made changes to the plugin to ensure the “Most Popular Content” table works as expected. Can you update to the latest version and confirm that you no longer see the titles in different languages?

Many thanks also for your assistance in helping us to identify this.
