I’m running 2.7.1 on my server and my own computer. On my computer, any theme I slap on there works. On my server, this is not the case. On both computers, the install is done directly into public_html, versus into a wordpress folder.

+ I made sure to do the manual install and not use Fantastico or something similar.

+ I’ve deleted WordPress (after making a back up, then removing the database and user and all WordPress files) and reinstalled twice, but am still having this problem.

+ I have checked and do not have a nesting issue. I uploaded the themes I want to use to /wp-content/themes/ and they are each in their own individual folders.

    + My permissions are correct.

+ The themes all show up in /wp-admin/themes.php but when I click on the uploaded themes to preview and activate them, the lightbox comes up blank.

+ If I activate one of the themes that come up blank, my site of course comes up blank (and no source code is available to view).

+ I have tried this with themes that are 2.7+ compatible, but the issue still takes place.

+ The theme I am particularly attempting to get to work, kong, is not considered to be 2.7 compatible, though it does work on my home computer’s 2.7 install of WordPress without any problems.

+ I realize this is an issue that has come up many times before on this forum, but after reading the archives and trying everything suggested, I have not found a solution that solves this for me at all.

    Any ideas?

Your gonna’ love this. Try removing any hyphens or punctuation in the theme folder names. Refresh your admin page and take another look.

I just did it twice and it cured the issue for me. (the blank theme preview issue)

example: change the folder named desk-mess to simply deskmess.

Let me know if it fixes anything for you as well.

[Edit] I must add that although I had a blank preview in the overlay in the admin panel, I could still apply the theme Ok.

Thanks for the input! Unfortunately, it doesn’t help my situation, mostly because none of the folders or file names within /wp-content/themes have any hyphens or other punctuation within the names.

I’m hopeful there’s something else out there that will do the trick.

Please let me know when when you resolve. I have the EXACT same issue. I used SFTP to upload. The default and classic themes show fine. All other themes do not.
Read posts through Goolgle search and on forum. No answer. My folders are not nested. My permissions are identical. Using WordPress 2.7.1.
The hypens were not the issue. Removed cookies/cache. If I figure something out, will post.

Problem fixed. Well where to begin? Human (mine) error.
First becaused I used SFTP could not tell that there was a dupicate directory of the wordpress files. I uploaded like to like. Didn’t realize…

Was able to see in Cpanel. Problem intensified when you upload themes. You can see the themes in your presentation panel, but wordpress unable to locate them.

As for the file name convention. The hypens are not an issue. Classic and Default use them. Had an issue with initial folder that had blank spaces. Best Theme instead of BestTheme. Lower and upper made no difference.

Let’s see, if you are installing and uninstalling this could be where a duplication occurs. Hope this helps someone.

Unfortunately, again, this is not the error I’m having. I’m looking at my directory listing right now via cPanel’s File Manager and it shows no duplicate directories.

Does anyone else have any ideas at all? I realize others have had similar problems and have all been able to fix this in other ways, but mine has not been resolved with those fixes at all.

I just upgraded to 2.7.1 via Simple Scripts for WordPress updater at BlueHost. My admin page for wordpress says it is 2.7.1 I just put some new theme folders via ftp on my server in the wp-content-themes folder and when I go to my admin page in wordpress, nothing shows up. As a matter of fact, there are some themes that do that are not even in the themes folder. What now? The theme I am using allowed me to add some sidebar widgets etc. no problem.

    Problem solved.
I reinstalled from WordPress (was first converted to simple scripts) function at Bluehost C Panel. I had also previously manually installed to try to try to solve the problem. I had only manually installed at root level rather than in the blog folder via ftp. I removed all the files that were at that level. Added new themes to themes and all is just right.
This forum really helped after reading and a re-read of everyones attempts to solve the problem. I noticed after reloading via my c-panel not as many loose files were in the root public/html from the manual load. There were only three folders to delete.
    Thanks to all.

I’ve done a clean install several times and have finally realized the error is taking place at an interesting time. If I just install WordPress, I can then load any theme I want onto it. Then if I try and upload my backed up WP file, it breaks the themes. In fact, the only themes that now work are two Hemingway ones; everything else comes up blank.

When I try to use widgets with HemingwayEx, the theme breaks. Therefore, I think the problem has to do with something in my database (which is 6MB) not being compatible with widgets.

Any ideas? Anyone really strong with WP perhaps willing to take this problem on as a paying gig? I’d love to get this issue fixed for good.

    AgentRelaxed,

Had the same problem. I realized the problem themes are the ones with a script folders like “js”, “scripts” in them. I uploaded themes without script folders in them and they work fine. I would say the problem lays within your hosting company doesn’t support action scripts.
