    Hi there

I have created a site at customername.mydomain.com. Now I have to move it to the client’s server. However, for now, the server can only to reached with a temporary domain (clientname.flab.hostingname.com). I want to move the site, check everything is OK, and then ask the hosting provider to change the DNS so it becomes clientname.com.

I have planned to move the site with Duplicator, as I am used to. However, that will set the URL’s to the temporary URL. And if I override the URL with the real URL, I cannot see if everything is OK before the DNS change.

How can I handle a situation like that?

    Best Regards,
    Peter

    Hello @pstidsen,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

I suggest following the instructions under Scenario B / Zero Downtime in the following guide:

    https://duplicator.com/knowledge-base/how-to-handle-various-install-scenarios/

The idea is to trick the machine running your browser into thinking the DNS has already been changed by editing its hosts file and then install to perform this process do the following:

    1. Change your hosts file* to make your domain name point to the new location
    2. Browse to the installer.php and install the site
    3. Test to ensure everything is working
    4. On your domain registrar, switch to your new host’s DNS servers
    5. After you are confident the DNS changes have propagated remove the entry in your hosts file

Please let me know if this works with you.

    Thanks!

    Hi @mohammedeisa

Thanks for your reply. I have tried the hosts file trick. However, the clientname.com domain is already pointing at the “live “new” server’s IP address, but just showing content from a different folder on the server.

    Hi @pstidsen,

Did this problem happen when you followed the Zero downtime instructions?

If this is correct, can you please explain which content is being displayed wrongly?

If you mean the uploads, update the path of the uploads folder of your website to point to the correct location:
For instructions, please check this guide:
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-change-the-default-media-upload-location-in-wordpress-3-5/

Please let me know if this helps or correct me if I misunderstood the problem.

I’m looking forward to hearing back from you.

    Thanks!

    Hi @mohammedeisa

I cannot do the hosts file trick due to how the server is set up. Any ideas on how to make the Duplicator transfer then?

    Best Regards,
    Peter
