Move Side Navigation to in between Header and Body of Page

Hi, I am using the suburbia theme from wp.com
I am trying to get rid of my side navigation bar, and make one that will go in between the header and body of the page.
I know how to make another navigation bar and position it, but my problem is that I don’t know how to make it horizontal instead of vertical, and I don’t know how to position it in between the header and body since I believe that area is the background, or if this is even possible.
I am considering making a top nav bar in photoshop, slicing it, and hyperlinking those images to pages, which is what I will do if it is not possible to place the wp_nav_menu function where I want it.
Let me know what you guys think would be best and how to do this, thanks a lot for any help.

also I should mention that I understand the left navigation bar in place is what is holding up the infrastructure of the page, once I figure out how to make a nav up top I will be replacing this side nav area with a widget area
