    Hello All!

I’m seeking help and suggestions for how to move one of my multisites to its own independent location. Why? Privacy- 2 of my 3 sites are business sites, and the 3rd, which I want to move, is personal.

    Here is my current setup:

    > Multisite with domain mapping
    > Each site has its own domain
    > Shared server- subdomain installation

The personal site I want to move will retain its current domain name. Unless someone has a better suggestion, I’m inclined to copy all my posts and pages and permalinks, delete the site and rebuild it on a new account and installation with my shared host. It’s a little starter site, so there won’t be much rebuilding to do, but it will still be time consuming. But I sure am open to an easier, simpler way of doing this!

  • If you only want to retain posts and pages, use the built-in import/export functions in WordPress.

Export your content from the Multi-Site. Set up the new WordPress installation and point the domain name at it. Then import the content.

Doing it that way won’t retain plugin settings, but it is the smoothest way to transfer a site.

@tim / tmoorewp- Will the built-in export function allow me to export data from only the one site?

    yes, the export is site-specific.

Just like you were moving a blog off wordpress.com.

@andrea_r Thanks! Does this sound like the right order:
    > Export site
    > Delete site
    > Host cpanel delete subdomain, FTP account, remove parked domain
    > Host move domain to new account
    > Install WordPress
    > Activate theme
    > Import site
    > Begin tweeking

I’d do everything except step 2, delete site. Retain it where it currently is until the site is running without issue on the new account.

    Disable the site, maybe ??

Order is changeable depedning on if you care about down time or not.

and yeah – don’t delete the old site on the network. even after you unmap it, no harm in it being there for a while.

If it’s a month after the move *& everything went smoothly, then yeah.

Also step 0.5: Backup database. Always.

Thanks All for the excellent advise! Umapping, but not deleting is excellent suggestion. That way I can still see the way I want things to look and behave on the new site until it’s up and running. And backup- yes- always before any major changes!
