I have a client that had a WP site created on a private host. She wants me to move the site to a public, commercial host and I am having trouble because the current host wont provide access to the cPanel so I can grab the tables inside the database.

Is it possible to move a WP site without access to the database? If so, how do I go about doing this?

I attempted to use the export inside WP but ended up with files that were written in Danish! Also, none of the plugins pulled over.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you,
    Janet

  • Normally I would suggest:

    • Do an XML export from within the admin panel under Tools > Export
    • Re-download the plug-ins and install them from scratch on the new server
    • Re-add & configure widgets from scratch on the new server
    • Download any uploaded images, files, etc. via FTP from the wp-content folder

As an alternative, install a database backup plug-in like WP-DB Backup and generate a database backup file which you can then use to restore the site on the new server. There is also a paid plug-in called BackupBuddy that I’ve heard good things about that does everything for you (plug-ins, widgets, themes etc.), but I haven’t tried it myself.

Not sure what you mean by “files written in Danish” – when you do an export you should only end up with a single XML file, and it should be in whatever language your site is in. ??

Please post back if you need more help.

Thanks so much for the help and please excuse my delayed reply – I am just getting back on this project. I am going to start over with this mess, using your suggestions.

The Danish language I believe came from a restored database that was backed up using the WP-DB Backup plug-in. I am going to use the dashboard’s XML export feature this time.

Believe me, if I run into any more phenomenons, I will post again!

    Thanks again!
