Move Suspect Comments to Moderation Queue ?!?!

I would try installing Spam Nuker:

or Spam Karma:
https://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/
as they are better at dealing with the type of problem you have – a few clicks and it’ll blow all the junk away.

Thanks Podz but isn’t there a bigger problem here – the fact that the “common spam words” detector embedded in WordPress 2.01 does not work!

I honestly don’t know if it is a bug.
I have used Spam Karma for a very long time which takes comment control away from WP and others are using Akismet. As such yours is the first post I recall about this, esp in v2.x it’s difficult to say.
