MoveableType is dying, but can WP handle enterprise blogs?

  • I’ve been using WP for over two years, I have multiple personal blogs using WP. My company chose MoveableType (MT) as their blogging platform and I was hired to maintain/develop it, I’ve been working with MT for about a year now and administer seven blogs.

    I believe I am quite an expert user on both platforms and WordPress is BY FAR the more superior platform. MT is dying – there are very few new plug-ins being released, their support platforms are barren, there’s been little or no development on their core platform.

    I’m seriously considering redesigning all my templates and migrating to WP, however I have a few concerns…

    1. MT creates static pages, WP does things dynamically. From a user point of view, dyanmic is great. But for server costs, static pages put much less strain on the server. I’ve tried some caching plug-ins for WP, but they’ve caused some problems. Does anyone have any data on MT’s strain on a server versus WP’s strain on a server. Are there any ways/plans for WP to create static pages and “rebuild” pages like MT.

    2. How does WP handle multiple blogs under one instance (blog farms)? Like, I want to manage multiple blogs with many authors from one control panel. I believe this was an issue with WP a couple years ago but this has been resolved in 2.0?

    3. I work in telecommunications, blogging via the mobile phone is very important to my company. Does anyone know about any apps for S60 smartphones that work with WP?

    4. Does WP offer any professional paid support? Like if I have a problem I can call up WP pro’s and get support ASAP for a fee?

    5. What kind of support does WP have for podcasts? Does it have functionality that will enclose mp3’s and other files into the posts?

  • 1. WP-Cache works great. I use it on one of my sites. Easy to install and use.

    2. Can’t. Gotta get WPMU.

    3. WP supports blogging by e-mail as well as XML-RPC. If neither of those work, there are plugins out there that create a mini-admin area for mobile phones.

    4. Nope, support is done entirely via volunteers. There is however the wp-pro mailing list which will help you get in touch with an experienced WP user who is willing to provide paid help.

    5. Not in the core (well, actually, it kinda does, but limited). We try to keep it light and push these kinda things to being plugins. See the Codex for a list of plugins.

    I will only comment on your first point (static/dynamic), especially since the WP core team probably have absolutely no intentions of changing the dynamic nature of WP’s content generation mechanism:

    There have been a number of discussions about WP performance issues in a “busy” environment. From my experience, one of the best things you or your host provider can do (but often don’t) is to tweak the MySQL database cache. See this discussion for more:

    Provided that cache is optimised correctly, you can probably expect at least a 200% performace boost. Whether that’s enough will depend on expectations.

    Thanks for all the input gang! A few more questions…

    1. Does anyone else agree that MT is dying? Is there any proof out there?

    2. For all of you who use MT and WP very heavily – do you agree that WP is far superior?

    3. Does WPMU have any limitations compared to the normal WP?

    2. I tried MT a few times. I used WP once and never left. WP has a huge active community and more help than MT has. Plus you know that WP was free, is free and will be free. MT costs whatever they want to make it.

    I tried MT a few months before moving to WP (just as 1.2 got left in 1.5’s dust….) I never felt “unconfused” with MT – it was always as if I was fighting the program’s limitations and that the limitations were growing faster than my comfort level with MT.

    Moving to WP was like going home after years away in the trenches.

    Cheers for all this input guys! This kind of response shows how incredible the WP community is. The MT community has become non-existant, I put a post on their bb and within a day or two I receive a response from one of their paid help who don’t help at all.

    So how easy or difficult is it to migrate existing blogs from MT to WP? I’ve read that MT’s export feature doesn’t export the URL names, is that still true?

    Easy? Yes, WordPress comes built in with an importer for MT and a bunch of other scripts. Just pick the file and click “import”.

    No clue on the URLs as I’ve never imported from MT.

    Nor did I – I hadn’t a clue about importers, I did mine manually (and a right pain it was too!)

    I just started from scratch and moved my old b2evo blog to a subdomain (and setup a redirect for it’s permalink structure).
