Moved server, having major issues

Have you tried reverting back to your old theme to see if the site is still working. When you have done this, you should contact the Thesis guys and ask them what is the current procedure to activate their theme. I am assuming you are using version 1.85 of Thesis. On Monday, October 1st 2012, a new version of Thesis (version 2.0) is coming out.

However, first thing is to get your site back to operational before doing anything. 7 years is my entire life and can’t afford to lose it!!

So change back to the old theme before doing anything else.

There are some issues with changing the theme back…

1) I couldn’t login to the WP dashboard. When I went to the site, all it had was a blank screen whether I went to rubyfruitradio.com or rubyfruitradio.com/wp-admin. No error messages, no nothing, just white.
2) I moved my nameservers (I can move them back to the old nameserver if you think that would help) and I was going to import all the things I had. Under wp-content, the old theme wasn’t listed in there. I didn’t delete anything so I am not sure how activating thesis made everything get fubared. I’ve activated thesis on several blogs, and never had an issue.

This is kind of a disaster for me and yeah, considering I work in IT, I should know better about backups. ??

A similar thing happened to me a while ago (blank page). I am not sure if this is the correct way to do it, but it worked for me.

I managed to get my site back by going into wp-config and changing “define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);” to true. Once that’s done, reload your page and hopefully there will be an error message that will give you a hint on what might have gone wrong.

Remember that everyone visiting your page will also see the error message. And don’t forget to turn debugging back to false when you are done. ??

Can I change this via FTP? I am in the process of waiting for my nameservers to switch back to the old ones so I can’t login to FTP yet (I never had c panel access).

I’m really freaking out as the prospect of manually getting every cached page from the last 7 years from google sounds like the most painful thing ever (none of the download widgets are working for me because I have spent the morning trying them all).

Well, you will have to download,edit and upload the file named wp-config.php. So yes, ftp is a must. If you know the IP address to your ftp server you could probably use that instead of https://ftp.yoursite.com. Same goes for your web page. Unless you changed IP as well…

I have changed the nameservers back to the original ones but they have not propagated yet.
You keep telling me to login to the dashboard. One of the first things I said was

How do I login when I can’t see anything?

I have tried to import the database (my friend sent it to me) and uploaded the wp-content folder, but it didn’t do anything either. So now, I am waiting to get a backup of the database from before Friday.

Is there a way to change to to the twentyeleven theme without having access to login via rubyfruitradio.com/wp-admin?

rubyfruitradio: How is WP installed on your server? In a sub folder? Cause rubyfruitradio.com/wp-admin/index.php gives a 404. To my knowledge a “normal” installation of wp would put the wp-admin folder in the root…

Anyhow, I think that when I got the blank page I messed up a function or something. The debug message gave me enough info to correct it.

I would try the debug=true first though. Many things can go wrong if you mess your database up!

Rename the thesis theme folder, too.

@knut- the actual login for it is rubyfruitradio.com/wordpress/wp-admin. RIght now, I get a 404 because the nameservers are still with the new host. I am waiting for the DNS to go back to the old host so I can monkey around with this.

Has your host given you a subdomain as well to go with your domain? for example, I created a test site using:

https://mytechhelp.site90.com and my domain is:
https://mytechhelp.co.uk

If you have a sub domain then try using it to login, otherwise use your hosts cPanel or what ever they are using to launch file manager and do the renaming of corrupt folders like plugins and themes which can be replaced easily.

Worse come to worst, you can delete the whole WP installation (Keep the Database) and then re-install it from scratch but using the same database. It works and I have done it many times. You have backups of your DB right?

Since you imported your database and your wp-content into a new install at Bluehost, you really did not need to change your name servers back. Your new install at Bluehost is essentially the same install.

This all happened when you changed your theme. I am willing to put money on it that it is not your plugins.

Here is a helpdesk article from Bluehost that goes over WSOD (white screen of death) fixes. It is very comprehensive and it tells you how to disable your theme without access to the dashboard.

You can keep your name servers where they are at now, I know the propagation can be a big pain, but if you want to host it through Bluehost, I would suggest changing them back, then fixing it there.
