• Hi.

I have a large multisite with over 300 subsites, that I need to move to my newly bought VPS. I don’t know which system is the best to run WordPress Multisite on ,but right now the VPS is running CentOS. I don’t know anything about migrating wordpress multisites.

I can’t find any guides or tutorials on how to do this on multisite. Anyone have experience with this?

That is the first hit if you google “Moving WordPress Multisite”

I would like to know if that worked on the first try if you give a go ??

I’ve done it multiple times, virtualgeorge (like about 10 minutes ago) without any issues.

I see a lot of people having problems with different backup plugins and it seems for me they didn’t always work 100% of the time so I started just doing it manually which I can prob do quicker anyways, at least on a single site.

I was first trying a plugin from wpmudev that prob works fine but I was having problems and it didn’t work the first few attempts so went manual. I just see a lot of posts about how complicated it can be to migrate multisite & how some places charge $300 to do it for you so was just curious how well this worked.

Tried it yesterday for the first time and it worked great and I think its much better than using plugins.

First I overlooked the url change in wp-config.php since I don’t usually have to change that on single sites. So my admin links still pointed to the old sites but once I changed that all was good.

For some reason I couldn’t get the search & replace script to run on the sever I was moving too at hostgator (clients server, I wouldn’t use them ??
It works fine on my server so just made all the changes to the db before moving.

Used cpanel to ftp the site files to new server & I was done in less time than it would have taken to read docs for a backup plugin.

    thanks!!

You can use duplicator to move your WP MU site. I did it recently. Anyways, Its really easy to move sites from one host to the other. I would recommend you to go for some Linux host that has cPanel.

If you are moving a whole install between servers, without changing a domain name, there is no need for a backup plugin, and I personally do not recommend them for Multisite.

Not because they don’t work, mind you, but because they take YOU away from understanding how your site is set up, which means you are less familiar with the files and the database. And for Multisite you must be aware of all those things.

Use SFTP/Rsync/SCP. Use PHPMyAdmin. Use wp-cli if you have it. Those tools will make you a multisite master ??
