I am creating a new website via WordPress to replace an existing static html site (kelcymae.com). I am using the Pinboard theme 1.0.7, and let me start by saying I am brand new to WordPress.

I created the entire site within a subdirectory, kelcymae.com/wp/. After completing the site, I followed the directions on “Using a pre-existing subdirectory install.”

As stated on the support page, I want to access my WordPress files from the root URL, kelcymae.com. I have not yet moved the original html files out of the root directory because I want the site to stay live until I am 100% sure the old site will change over smoothly to the new WordPress site. I followed the directions on changing the Site Address and copied the index.php and .htaccess files from the “wp” subdirectory over into the root directory. At this point, I have not moved or deleted the old site’s html files.

After I copied those two files, all the pages looked good and have the desired permalinks except for the Home Page. Pages such as kelcymae.com/media and kelcymae.com/press are all behaving as desired. When I click on the Home page, I get a “Content not found’ error. After reading some forum posts, I saw that I possibly needed to change over to a Post page rather than a Static page. I tried that, and while the home page loaded correctly, it only did so with the permalink “kelcymae.com/home/” (rather than kelcymae.com) and when I click Home from any other page on the menu, it takes me back to “Content not found.” I changed the Home page back to a static page, and the permalink is now correct, but I am again experiencing “Content not found.” When I click on Pages>Home>”Visit Page” from the Dashboard, it takes me to the old website’s index page.

    1. How can I get my Home page to load correctly from other pages within the site?

    2. Once I ensure the content is there and that the Home page can be accessed correctly by all other pages on the site, how do I override the old website’s home/index page? Does simply deleting/moving the old files work, or do I need to do something more complex?

    THANK YOU!

Now I seem to have made the problem worse and can no longer sign in to my WordPress dashboard. I found another WordPress support page that implied the WordPress URL is meant to be the “home” url that you want people to type in to find you and that the Site URL was the place for your files… So I swapped them. I put Kelcymae.com in the WordPress URL setting and kelcymae.com/wp as the Site URL. Now when you go kelcymae.com/wp, it takes you to the home page and the content is there, but the entire Pinboard theme is gone.

I can also not access kelcymae.com/wp/wp-login, so I can’t alter the URL settings back to what they were.

    PLEASE HELP!

Okay, using this page I was able to change the site URLs back in the database. Now I am back to my original problem of the “Content Not Found” homepage.

    Any assistance is appreciate!

Okay, I found the problem. The URL link for the Home page under Menu still had the old directory URL. I changed it to kelcymae.com and now everything works correctly.
