Ah, how predictable, it *did* go wrong….

    My old site is https://www.essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk

I installed WP at https://www.essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk/wp with the intention, once I’d built it and transferred all the content, to https://www.essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk.

    I found instructions here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress

I’ve already got the directory so that’s #1.1 sorted (I backed up the “old” site, downloaded using FileZilla and it’s in a folder on my desktop, so then I deleted the content, all except the /wp folder).

1.2. Yes, downloaded /wp to my desktop as well.

I get to #4 and this is what it looked like to start with:
    https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v163/helvissa/wpchangeurl_zps64c1718f.png

Following the instructions, I merely deleted /wp from both boxes (so it just said https://essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk), then saved.

    And then got the Internal Server Error 500! ;___;

So I hit backspace, changed it back to what it was originally (as per screencap) and now there’s massive problems. It’s still saying internal service error and I can’t login in to do anything to fix it, it just hangs.

The website itself just looks bizarre, like something from Web 1.0 without the theme showing or anything.

Why has it done this? Have I misunderstood the instructions?

When I initially set it up, I asked ASmallOrange (my host) if it was fairly easy to move, and I just got instructions on how to move stuff in ftp “Oh, you just highlight the content of the folder and move it to the directory you want” – which is clearly total and utter cobblers! (and not what I was doing, after I’d read the instructions).

I feel sooo sad because I’ve spent ages making a really nice site and now, in one action I don’t understand, the entire thing is ruined. What can I do????

Should I delete the /wp folder and upload my backup?

(or can I start again, just install WP at the root directory and add everything back? The only thing is there’s so much work involved as it’s very document/pdf heavy…).

I can’t get into wp/wp-admin anymore. I just get the front page of the “old” website (which is going to be the current website for quite some while…).

    Resolved!

I spoke to ASmallOrange again and they said that, because I installed it using Softaculous, it’s actually really simple to move it.

I went to Softaculous, found WP, cloned the installation at essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk/wp, then when it asked me where I wanted to install it, I just said essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk

    And… it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!

What a flippin’ faff that was, but it’s all ok now. And lord knows what happened earlier, but it’s no longer my concern. It’s loading a bit slow but that’s probs cos my connection as slowed down ridiculously and the poor site is trying to cache itself or what have you.

But there are you, folk…. SOFTACULOUS c’est FABULOUS!

https://essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk/ looks just fine to me, I don’t see any problems besides a few broken images, which can generally be fixed by changing all links with https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/

Are you only seeing the Error 500 in your Dashboard?

Ah, looks like our replies crossed, I’m glad you were able to fix it! ??

    Hello James,

    Thanks for replying!

Yeah, it’s all fixed now. I wish ASO had told me when I first asked how easy it was to move WP using Softaculous, but phew…. *massive sigh of relief*

I’m not sure why the links broke, but I’ve re-entered the html and it’s doing what it should now. Hurrah!
