• We have recently completed a .com website and now I am trying to take the site and replicate it onto our .ca domain on the same server. Since this site will have similar content but be “Canadianized” with proper spelling, etc. we need to run 2 databases.

I have completed a fresh install, copied all the relevant files over (theme, plugins, etc.) and created a new database. I have exported the original database, completed all the changes to reflect the .ca and have imported it into the newly created database (home, url, site, upload path, etc.).

Essentially, I have followed the game plan inside the “Moving Domains” help file. Changed

Now, I can see the homepage, I can login to the backend and see all the pages, posts, plugins, etc. But, when I try to view any of the internal pages (except homepage, but that is because it is coded, not being pulled from DB) I am getting a 404 error.

I’ve worked it over for a few hours and just can’t figure it out. I’m hoping a fresh set of eyes looking at it for the first time will solve it for me. I sincerely appreciate your help.

  • Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting. If that works, then set a custom permalink structure back up again.

@esmi: Thanks for the thought, but unfortunately that did not work. The links from the nav are directed to pages, not posts and so I don’t think that these are affected by the permalinks. I also tried to navigate to our blog post entries, but those did not pull up either using the default permalinks.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks!

What happens when you try to preview a page or post via the Admin area?

It comes up the same way. 404 error. It really is the strangest thing. All of the references show the .ca and the admin is fully there with complete posts, etc.

It just won’t pull up on the front end.

I think there’s something left in the database from the original domain. You could confirm this by setting up a new database and re-running the install with wp-config.php pointing to the new db. if that does work, it might be a lot easier to export the content from the old site (using Admin/Tools) and then import into the new site the same way. The only downside to this is that you’ll need to re-upload all images.

    Esmi-

When I ran the DB originally, I opened the SQL DB in Notepad++ and did a find and replace of all instances between the .com and the .ca, so I’m not sure what could have been left behind in the DB. I just looked at it (by searching) and there is no reference to a .com at all in there.

Nonetheless, I will try to re-do the database again. Thanks!
