• I’ve decided to move my site from wordpress.com to a self-hosted site using WP 3.1 (via GoDaddy). When I went to set up the new GoDaddy site, they asked for my domain. So, I entered the one I’m currently redirecting my .com site’s traffic to.

I then installed the 3.1 software, and created a new database in a subfolder (since it wouldn’t let me put it in the root directory, saying that path was already in use).

Here’s the problem: When I try to log-in to my admin panel, it takes me to my .com log-in, since I’m using the same domain name. Can I not access the .org admin screen until I switch the DNS to the new host? Should I just wait 24 hours and see if I can then log into my “new” .org admin panel?

I was hoping to work on the new site while the old one was still up, and then switch over when I’m ready. I may be in over my head here.

To clarify, I already changed the DNS info on the .com site to the new GoDaddy DNS, and am now waiting for it take effect.

Can you share the URL, if you don’t mind. Not sure, what went wrong. Godaddy has a build-in installer for WordPress, from what I remember. You might try that. Alternatively, you can download from https://www.ads-software.com/download/ and then install as usual. In either case, it is certainly possible to set up self-hosted blog while WP.com blog is still running.

I, too, am using GoDaddy (and have been happy for many years now). You should be able to call them and have them walk through this with you. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with their CSRs. Remember, you pay them for this support.

Thanks, guys … It looks like my site is mostly up and running this morning. I had to wait for the DNS servers to catch up with me, which happened overnight. I still have some kinks to work out, but it appears the problems are fairly straightforward. And Gabe, I’ll take your advice and give GoDaddy a call today to help me clear the final few hurdles. Good to know they’re helpful.

For future reference, you can make sure that your browser is ‘pointing’ to the right place (during DNS transitions) by editing your hosts file. This wont fix the problem (for anyone else) but it means that you know is happening.

I often build sites before clients have purchased the domain name, or literally as they purchase it, before the ‘net knows the domain. I use this and just let it sit there until the rest of the world catches up ??
