• Unfortunately, Stripe has turned off the faucet on our business, and getting them to transfer card and subscriber info to Authorize (our only other option as PayPal has denied us as well) has been an incredible hassle.

Is there a way to move from s2member to some other membership plugin in a seamless way? I understand if this is sensitive information – would be willing to pay extra money for this level of support. I’ve always loved working with s2member and their dev team, but our whole business (and our livelihoods) are at stake on this one and I’m just exploring my options.

  • @hoopdreams,

Sorry to hear this. What exactly do you want to move?

Are you aware that s2Member Pro supports Authorize.net? That would be the most seamless way to move. See this.

    Thanks for replying KTS.

We have a number of issues in moving from Stripe to Authorize. First of all, they don’t work together to pass along recurring subscription information, so we’d have to add all 2,500 of our subscribers manually.

Next, we’ve tried Authorize in the past, and it’s been a conversion killer for us. Not sure why – perhaps the extra information they ask for when validating CCs?

Authorize’s user end interface for us is also much worse for a number of reasons.

But mostly, it’s because we can’t automate the process.

We want to move away from s2member because it doesn’t support smarter payment gateway solutions like Braintree or Recurly, and Stripe won’t have us. We want to move all of our s2member data into another plug-in.

OK, I thought you were saying that you wanted to move to Authorize.net. But what exactly is it that you need to move? The financials are the hardest bit and, as you know, s2Member doesn’t store them anyway.

So are you talking about protecting posts, files, content dripping, or what?

I’m talking about changing from s2member to something like membermouse that supports other payment gateways. I can apparently move from Stripe to other gateways (besides authorize) much more easily.

Sorry, but that’s not what I’m asking. Obviously, you can just uninstall one plugin and install another.

My question was trying to discover what specific problems there are in making this change. Without understanding what you want to do with memberships on your site, it’s impossible to provide a meaningful answer.

I’m sorry I’m having trouble understanding you. My issue is in converting the 8,000 or so membership profiles we have in s2member to another plug-in. I could uninstall s2 and install something else, but would I still keep that membership data? Is there something that can keep track of what posts/pages are restricted, what level of access my s2member members currently have, and convert that somehow?

Well, the primary issue there is going to be where the new plugin stores its users’ details (i.e. whether it stores them in native WordPress dadabase tables — like s2Member — or its own custom tables).

OK, what I’d suggest is that you use the s2Member Export tool to export your list of users to CSV. That will (a) ensure that you have a copy if anything goes wrong, but (b) it should also provide all the info you need to import those users into another plugin.

Then you can ask the developers of the new plugin whether they have an import capability. If not, you could use a CSV importer plugin to map the details about your users from the s2member fields to those in the new plugin.

Unless the new plugin has a special script for this, copying over posts and page restrictions is probably going to require manual labor, though it will be easier if you have restricted by categories or posts.

Finally, I’d suggest you clone your current site to a development site, and do everything there. Then you can copy or upload everything back when you are sure you have it working.

Actually, if you use a CSV exporter plugin, you might also be able to export all your posts and pages, with their protections, and then map them to your new plugin using the CSV importer plugin.

Thanks for the help. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hi – how did you go with this? Did you decide on a new membership plugin? What did you use and how did the migration go? I’m having recurring issues with S2 Member as a result (I believe) of changing to the Kleo theme. I’m trying to work out whether I change themes or change from the free version of S2 member to something else. Thanks.
