Hello! A pal of mine is thinking of starting a blog so I sent him to WordPress. I suggested that he go with a WordPress.com blog, register his domain name of choice and then if later he wants to forward his .com blog to the domain name he could. OR he could download the www.ads-software.com stuff and move his blog over.

Is this good advice? Is it possible to forward a WordPress.com blog to a hosted domain (or is is vice versa)? Is it easy to move data from WordPress.com to your own domain? (I see advice for moving files from all sorts of other blogging sites, so I assume that from WordPress would be a snap!)

Thanks much. I hate to get him started on the wrong foot.

Unfortunately, the answer to those questions are no, no, and no.

WordPress.com is similar to, but different from, the DIY WordPress software package.

Moving the blog from wordpress.com to your own setup is not particularly easy, albeit not particularly hard. Getting the blog posts and the comments moved over to your new system is less than a snap, really.

Best to start on your own domain from the beginning, IMO.

Sorry, but, speaking as someone who tried that route, I gotta agree with Otto42. It’s a pain in the butt. Check out this thread on the subject:

Sad! I was hoping that the options I was suggesting would work out. But better to know now and start out on the right foot. Thanks a bunch!
